A letter from No Soxx Hall of Famer Doug Crandall......

Twenty years...

Think about that for a moment. What were you doing twenty years ago ?

I got a call from Rod Dalen the other day, stirring up some old memories. He let me know that No Soxx Volleyball is celebrating it's 20th anniversary, and asked if I had any pictures of "the old days," and if so, could he use them on his web site. Of course we got to talking about the old days, finding ourselves amazed at where our lives were at now compared to back then....

Many of you who read this may not know who I am, which is okay by me. However, with the exception of Rod's family, I have known Rod longer than any of you. He began No Soxx Volleyball in the latter part of the 1980's, when volleyball was really beginning to blossom as a sport. He and I were friends during these years, and I remember distinctly how excited he was at the potential for No Soxx, having big plans even then. Most of his first tournaments were small affairs, having only two-four nets each. Yet, they were fun as well, and many of us who played in them kept going back for more. Ultimately, No Soxx developed a core following who played in every event Rod held.

Ahh, those were the grand old days. We were young and full of ourselves. Having fun, drinking beer, and volleyball were our passions, and at Rod's events we got to combine them all. Our level of fun and the memories they have caused have become the stuff of legend. Simple words as "Amtrak", River Boat", "Calvin", Sparkly eyes", and "Frooooop," can evoke immediate laughter out of many of us, and embarrassment for some others. Through it all, we grew up, becoming who we are today. We shared an era of our lives together, an era that is the very core of what No Soxx Volleyball is all about.

For twenty years now, No Soxx Volleyball has been providing us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. Wow ! It seems hard to fathom, yet here we are, able to look back on it all with love and fondness. I am certain that each of you, from those who were there at the beginning through those who still particiapte today, will join me in saying thanks to you Rod, and to No Soxx Volleyball, for helping to provide such memorable times

Rod, this is for you!
CHEEEEEEREEEEEEEEEEEEEERS !
